When the COVID-19 crisis emerged, Phylagen rapidly pivoted its digital product strategy to address critical environmental health and safety challenges specific to pandemic management. Their groundbreaking technology in COVID detection and data analysis required a sophisticated yet intuitive platform to communicate complex risk assessments and patterns effectively.

As the Director of Product Design/Principal Designer at Presence Product Group, I led the charge in reimagining and redesigning Phylagen’s product. Partnering closely with Phylagen’s executive team, I spearheaded a holistic design transformation that aligned their cutting-edge technology with user-centric principles. The result was an elegant, data-driven interface that empowered stakeholders to make informed decisions during a time of unprecedented global urgency.

02. SIMPLIFYING DATA TO IDENTIFY OUTBREAK PATTERNS

I approached this redesign with a multi-user-first mindset, aiming to create a product that enabled any user—whether monitoring a global outbreak or investigating a single workplace kitchen in New York—to quickly and intuitively identify potential patterns of concern.

 

To achieve this, I developed new experiences for the overall product – including global and local map interfaces, detection markers, multiple data visualization options, advanced filtering capabilities, risk assessment modules, automated email alerts, and comprehensive PDF analysis reports. 

 

This holistic redesign resulted in a highly adaptable, user-centric product that empowered a diverse range of users—from building managers to executive stakeholders to microbial scientists—ensuring actionable insights and seamless decision-making across all levels.
